El Salvador is known to have one of the highest rates of violence and homicide rate in the world. Members of the LGBTI community and especially Trans Women are surpassingly frequent victims of hate crimes – often executed by the police, military and gangs like the MS13 or Mara18. Since 1994, more than 600 LGBTI people have been killed, according to data from four Salvadoran organizations of LGBT rights. To date, no case has been judged so far which represents the high rate of impunity and injustice in the whole country. (Human Rights Watch, World Report 2019).
The LGBTI Pride, held in the capital on the 29. June 2019 was a very rare but euphoric moment in El Salvador where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual and intersexual persons were able to walk freely and without fear through the streets expressing their pride, identity and demanding their rights and respect.
